One of the most rewarding forms of charity is volunteer work. You are doing your community a great service by donating your time and effort to helping out anyway you can. A great way to service ones community is to become a volunteer firefighter. Volunteer firefighter work is very rewarding and you can potentially save countless lives. Despite its rewards the process to become a volunteer firefighter is very difficult and takes many steps which much be completed first.
First you must ask yourself if you are ready for such a responsibility. Volunteer firefighters make a commitment to the service that they cannot break. The process is long and arduous and at times may feel like it isn’t worth it. But anyone who has finished the training program can tell you it is very worth it. Only if you have what it takes.
Before even considering joining you must first be in good physical shape. It takes a lot of strength and stamina to be a volunteer fire fighter. If you already take care of yourself you may want to incorporate some more cardiovascular and strength training into your regime just to prepare. If you aren’t in shape then you should start a workout routine before you begin the program. This way you can start the build the muscle mass you would need to be an effective firefighter.
To begin the process contact your local fire department using their non-emergency number. Speak with the station officer and they can help you get started. For a hands one experience they might be able to set you up on a ride along in a fire truck. This is a great preliminary to the training program as it gives a great look as to what it takes to be a fireman. If your local fire department doesn’t offer any training programs you can do an internet search for your nearest fire station which offers volunteer programs.
If your local fire station does offer volunteer programs you must first fill out an application. While your application is being processed you will have to wait while they perform a background check.
If everything is in order then you will be chosen to begin your training. The volunteer training program differs from state to state. But all firefighters must complete a 110 hour NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) certified course. After completing the course you will be certified volunteer firefighter. This may lead to many more opportunities such as becoming a full time firefighter.
Becoming a volunteer firefighter is very rewarding. You will be one of select few who are saving lives every day. If you are able of completing the training then it is an extremely rewarding experience.
