If you have a sectional garage door, chances are that one day you will walk out, push the button to open the door and wait while nothing happens. You can look around and there do not seem to be loose parts lying around on the floor but it is not working. Before you call for Houston Garage door repair service company, here are a few steps that might save you a service call.
Check to be sure that nothing has been misplaced next to the garage door. A shovel could have fallen and be leaning on the door. Something could be interfering with the safety sensor. Something hanging on the wall could be interfering with the door operating correctly. Move the items and the door may begin working as dependably as always.
Take the time to check the circuit breakers. A power overload situation could have a circuit in the reset position. Follow the directions in your circuit breaker box to reset the breaker. Be sure that you also check for any reset buttons on the garage door opener. The button is usually red. Press the button to see if the door will open normally.
If this does not solve the problem, then make sure that all the garage door bolts are tightened. They vibrate loose after years of use and this can cause the door to bind and not open. Replace any missing nuts or bolts. If a hinge is very loose, reposition it so that the hinge is centered over the joint between the door panels.
Bolts that hold the door in place should be tight at both the door frame and the ceiling. Replace any missing bolts.
Check and lubricate the pulleys. Use household oil or a special garage door lubricant to lubricate pulleys.
Be sure that you check each of the rollers. The metal shaft should move in the hinges freely. The lower rollers are subject to moisture and grime, so they are more likely to rust. They should also be lubricated with garage door lubricant or graphite powder. Open and close the door manually to check for binding rollers. Replace any rollers that are not freed by lubricating.
After trying all of the above procedures, if you still have difficulty with the garage doors, call for help. Garage door spring replacement and adjustment is best left to the professionals as it can be very dangerous. Repair companies can let you know if the spring needs tightening or replacement.
