Don’t Read This If You Plan To Build A Go Kart

Your age doesn’t matter. Where you live doesn’t matter. Only your attitude matters. That means any one and every one can enjoy go karting. Go karters often consider building their own go kart. Because the design is simple, building one should be simple. Not necessarily. There are some compelling reasons why you should not be building your own go kart.

On one hand, the design of a go kart is relatively simple. It can, however, be a complicated building structure. Once you locate a reputable source for plans, look over the bill of material. The bill of material for this project can be specialized. The same thing is true of the tools you need. You may find that obtaining the materials and renting or buying specific tools is time consuming and expensive.

Experience in building vehicles or other machines is vital - if you haven’t got this, it isn’t advisable to try. You’re going to be driving your completed go kart around a track at high speed; do you really trust yourself to build it? Building your own go kart can be an extremely risky business, so bear in mind the dangers that can come from it.

So, not only can the do it yourself go kart itself be an accident waiting to happen, the process of building it brings it own hazards. A first time go kart builder is at risk if they are not familiar with the construction skills required.

The cost and time commitment to build a go kart can be substantial. Usually, the amount spent on materials and tools adds up rapidly as you go through the building process. Finding a suitable engine alone can be expensive and time consuming.

These initial costs aren’t the only financial outlay you will have. Do it yourself go carts have a reputation of coming with a long list of problems to be handled. You don’t have a manufacturer to call. You don’t have a dealer to take it back to for any warranty work. If you built it and something is wrong, you’re the one who has to fix it. The extra amount of money that may have to be spent for repairs and do-overs adds up rapidly.

Building a go kart is not something you can do in a weekend. There are many parts that take several steps. Remember, you’re still on the learning curve. If you make a mistake, if you measure wrong, if you have to do something over, the time and the money mount up. When, not if, but when the go kart needs repair, the time and money it will take will quickly add up.

You have a choice. You can build your own go-kart with a major investment of money or time with no guarantee that you can use it as soon as you finish. Or, you can get a quality product, ready to run, for less money and be out on the track enjoying it sooner. The answer is obvious.

You Can Have Great Fun With Go Carts

Wouldn’t you like to spend your Saturday or Sunday going for a spin on your new go kart. Growing up as a kid like most boys I always wanted something motorized whether it was a dirt bike, go cart or ATV’s of some kind.

My father thought motorcycles were too dangerous so a go cart for us was the next best solution. They are on four wheels and thus safer than the 2 wheeled counterparts.

Go kart racing has evolved with the times. Go karts now are much more technical and very fast for some models. They will run as fast as 80mph for some 2 stroke models. The Superkart will go as fast as 160 and can be very dangerous.

hough dangerous they can be safely handled and slowed down with a governor which is installed on most models to help control the speed at which a child can go. It can be adjusted to slower or faster depending on you desired speed.

Go Karts range anywhere from 250 up to 800cc and get get as fast as 65mph which is for adults only of course. Go cart racing is also becoming a popular sport in many states. Several Nascar drivers started out racing go carts and evolved from there as children.

Go Carting is the most popular motor sport in America. The off road aspect of go carts is widely appealing to many young kids. The best places to find go carts and go cart parts are at local hardware stores like Pep Boys.

In addition, with the roll caged go karts, seatbelts and arm restraints are required. Go kart frames are built of steel, and the body is typically made from fiberglass. They have a high-tech braking system that uses a set of rear disc brakes, and they feature a super-responsive, straight-steering system.

To decide if your child is ready for go kart racing make sure you test their skillset and also get them out on practice track to see if they can handle the environment

How To Tune Go Kart Engines

Learning how to properly tune a small engine on a go kart is an important step in maintaining your kart. These engines, while small, can be tuned to quite a high level of performance if done correctly and with some planning. Most engines are of four main varieties, so let’s take a look at them first.

The four types of engines start with the most prized, which is one of double-bearing specifications, and with a bore made of aluminum and a crankshaft featuring a roller bearing on either side. It’s a little rare, though, and maybe not worth the hassle. This is because an engine with a steel bore and a twin- bearing set-up is just about as popular and useful, and it wins many races, too.

The last two engines consist of engines of either aluminum or steel bores and a single roller bearing next to their crankshafts. Any one of these four engines can be very competitive if they’re built up properly and then tuned correctly. As for tuning, keep in mind that the most important activity - after regular oil changes — is the inspection and care of the single spark plug. Remove and inspect the plug on a scheduled basis, taking care to examine the electrode for signs of carbon build-up and any burnt or scored surfaces.

Always check the distance between the plug tip and the electrode. Usually, the gap will need to be between.025 and.030, according to engine specs. Take a gap tool and space it out or close it in, if necessary. After that, insert it back into the engine and then go over the plug wire’s surfaces for cuts or abrasions. Any damage to the wire can cut down on top engine performance.

The engine’s air filter will require an examination and a light cleaning with an air hose, most times. If it’s too clogged or dirty, just throw it away and put a new one in. After that, check over the carburetor fuel-air mix, making sure the needle valve is tightening all the way down and then turned back out 2.5 turns. This should serve to give the carb the proper gas and air mix. Once that’s completed, timing can be checked with a timing light and a ‘how to’ guide.

Practicing tuning and adjusting your go kart engine is a skill every hobby go karter should learn. Keeping a properly maintained and race-tuned engine up and running will help contribute to the enjoyment many people derive from racing these little motors. Perform regular maintenance and tuning schedules, though, to ensure top performance.
