Do You Have All The Information You Need To Choose A Wind Turbine?
Oct 9, 2009 Save Money
Home wind turbines typically do not deliver their maximum rated output. Why is this the case? Simply because surface and near-surface winds are generally neither strong nor consistent enough to rotate the propellers at their “best RPM range” all of the time. Raising the turbine to higher elevations usually increases the average current output because wind strength typically increases at higher elevations/altitudes although wind directions still remain variable.
The same wind supply inconsistency makes wind power inappropriate as a fixed, demand-driven source of energy unlike coal- or diesel-burning power plants that can be turned on or off according to consumer needs. This situation should change, however, if superconducting charge (or current) storage devices become cheaper. Very large-capacity battery banks, or very large batteries, or super capacitors should also be designed for the purpose of storing large amounts of electricity.
Small wind turbine generators have been around in the US since the 1920s. The Jacobs Wind Electric Company consistently sold 1- to 3-kW wind turbines to consumers in North America and around the globe until the US rural electrification grid came fully online in the late 1940s, consequently reducing the demand for independent energy supplies.
Because wind turbines are based on old technology they are incredibly reliable and pretty easy to keep running for anyone who is even a reasonably good mechanic. Even making your own unit won’t require to many expensive tools.
A Jacobs wind turbine unit was installed at the South Pole by members of Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expedition in 1933. Jacobs wind turbines are still available for purchase in the US today. Wind turbines probably can be a useful alternative sources of energy for household or commercial end-users. Denmark currently sources about 20% of its national electrical energy supply from offshore wind farms.

How To Make Your Home More Energy Efficient
Sep 3, 2009 Save Money
Without forking out too much money before you can actually save, you can convert your home into an energy efficient environment. Here are 8 different ways you can make your home more energy efficient.
Installing plastic window covers on your windows, or tinting them. This will help keep the cool air inside, and slow down the process of heat entering the home. Or it could go the other way around if you are trying to heat the home.
Make sure that you have a good seal on all the doors that are in your home leading outside. One way to check if you have a good seal is, if the door is shut and you can see daylight, you do not have a good seal. These gaps can be sealed up with any type of weather stripping.
Replace your incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lights. You will save as much as $40 on electric bills over the life of the fluorescent light. And since it lasts 8 to 10 times more than the regular incandescent, you spare yourself in spending 8 to 10 times on replacing bulbs.
If you have a high pressure shower head, replace it with a shower head that has a built in water saver. Not only will this save you about 50 bucks a year on your energy bill, but it will also help conserve water.
Most people do not know about this one, but the louder you play your music the more energy you are using. So unless you absolutely need the television and stereo loud enough to annoy the neighbors, turn it down a notch and save a couple of bucks.
Ensure that you are using energy efficient appliances. Mostly all appliances that are manufactured as of now have an energy star rating, and if it is in your budget switch as soon as possible. Air conditioners, washers, dryers, fridges and heaters are the ones that use the most energy.
Keep the walls sealed. You would not only concentrate on your windows, doors, sills, on joints, you should also consider sealing the walls. Any cracks have a tendency to grow larger and larger. Make sure that your walls are sealed so that the air from the outside would not enter.
Desktops can use up to 10 times more energy than laptops do. Think about that if you are looking to by a new computer. You can also take into consideration about purchasing printers and fax machines that are energy efficient as well, as there are many of them out there.
If you seen this article beneficial about energy efficiency tips then you should stop by the authors page which explains in detail home improvement tips.

Why Energy Saving Light Bulbs Save Money
Aug 1, 2009 Save Energy
One of the most difficult issues when you decide to implement energy saving light bulbs in your house is cost. Since each energy efficient light bulb will cost you around $5 each, it is reasonable to stop for a moment and ask yourself what your Return On Revenue (ROI) will be.
As I was visiting the GE Lighting website (which I have no affiliation with), I found a very useful tool for calculating cost savings if you install energy saving light bulbs. This calculator assumes that you use a light for 4-hours a day and a electricity rate of 10c/kWh. It then show you how much money you will save by installing energy saving light bulbs.
If you wish to swap 4 100-Watt standard bulbs with 4 26-Watt energy saving light bulbs (CFL bulbs), it is calculated that your yearly savings will be $43.22. I used 4 x 100-Watt bulbs since that is a standard configuration for a sierra fan.
In my house I found 40 x 100-Watt bulbs, 25 x 60-Watt bulbs and 4-track bulbs. According to the GE savings calculator I will have an annual electricity savings of $625 if I will replace all my standard bulbs with energy saving light bulbs. That being said, to go and buy 65 energy saving light bulbs for this project, it will cost me $325.
To calculate your ROI for installing energy saving light bulbs, let’s look at how to calculate it: ROI= [(Payback - Investment)/Investment)]*100 [(625-325) / 625)] * 100 48%
During the first year we will see a return on our investment of 48%. As I was looking at these numbers it became evident that it will be smart to upgrade to energy saving light bulbs, even if in the beginning it will cost us some money.
Cutting cost is in the numbers. Changing one 100-Watt bulb to a smart energy efficient bulb, will save you $10/year. The average home has between 50-100 bulbs. Considering the increase of energy rates, this would indeed be one of the smartest things to you for your family.

How to Save Money on Your Electric Bills
Jul 6, 2009 Saving On Home
Summer is right around the corner, which means trips to the beach, time off from school and of course, outrageous electric bills. Don?t spend a fortune this summer on your energy costs, follow this guide to save money all around your home.
As startling as this is, remember that approximately half of the energy used in a home is for heating and cooling. Thus, taking care of these specific appliances in order to make sure that they do not suck up energy is highly important. Steps for doing so include changing the filter regularly, tuning up the equipment, and sealing and insulating the ducts. You also might look into a programmable thermostat that changes the temperature when the home is unoccupied or the occupants are asleep, for instance, thus reducing the energy used.
Household Appliances - There are dozens of different large and small appliances scattered throughout our homes, we do in many ways depend on them. Just a brief list of these, all of which eat up energy, include televisions, computers, AC units, refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, lamps and many more. You can help lower associated costs by looking for highly rated, energy efficient models that take less energy to run and provide the same benefits.
Save money on water heating - Water heating accounts for a large percentage of every home’s energy bill. But you don’t have to start instituting a 5 minute shower rule to see savings in this area. You can buy an energy efficient water heater which will get the job done while eating up less resources.
Many will be shocked to hear that lighting costs the average homeowner approximately 20% of their electric bill. Sure, your mother always told you to turn off the lights in a vacated room, and that helps tremendously, however you also need to remove the incandescent light bulbs that may still be in your home and replace them with CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) that mostly come in those weird spiral bulbs. Those newer bulbs use 75% less energy than the incandescent bulbs! Startling, but true, and the cost of the new bulbs will easily be made up within 6 months of usage because if you?ll remember they last approximately 10 times longer than an incandescent bulbs. Home Electronics
Various appliances from TVs to even stoves and microwaves use digital displays that are in ?standby? power mode. When purchasing such items make sure of the energy rating that each is given, and opt for those that use less energy even in ?standby? mode! Office Equipment
Save money on office equipment - If you have a lot of office equipment in your home, you can be adding lots of money to your electric bill. Think about it, you have computers, printers, faxes, shredders, scanners and other pieces of energy craving equipment. Buy energy efficient models and turn everything off when it isn’t in use.
In general, most people will be superbly surprised with the energy savings experienced by following these very simple tips.

How To Reduce Your Electric Bill
May 27, 2009 Save Energy
Many of us feel overwhelmed by our enormous electricity bills. Well, now is the time to take the steps necessary to save electricity, save money and save the planet. Here are some simple steps to take that we often overlook.
Limit Use: If you were to take a call in another room, would you step out with concern for the appliances left running in the room? Take a look around. Turn off all appliances that aren’t currently being used, even if you will be using it later. Even that will help.
What do you consider an appliance? Would you turn off the television, but not the lights? You may need the lights when you’re in the room, but it’s only a waste of energy if it’s on in an empty room.
Make Smart Investments: Replace your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL bulbs). This is a great investment that will save you money.
Power Save Gadget: Buy the power save gadget. It helps by monitoring the power supply to your home and only uses the minimum that is needed.
Appliance Usage: Many of us complain that our electric bill is sky-high because of all the appliances and gadgets we use. However, it is not how many appliances we are using, it’s how we are using them.
Only do laundry when there’s a full load to be done. Keep the geyser on only for short time. Air-conditioners should be kept at a moderate temperature. Shut down computer or turn off monitor when it’s not in use.
Sticking to this way of life saves power, saves money and helps with our current energy crisis.
Remember, reducing your electric bill is equivalent to saving power and helping the world save power for future generations.
