GPS systems are now used for a number of everyday situations. You will no longer need to worry about paper maps when driving. Car GPS systems are probably the most recognized use of the GPS technology. Drivers use these GPS navigation systems by simply entering the address of their intended destination into the GPS device and then following the detailed directions the GPS devices reports back the correct course decisions to the driver. If the driver needs to go off the established course for any reason, the device will quickly recalculate the correct course from the new starting position. This feature alone is worth the price of the GPS system as it will save drivers tons of headaches by not subjecting them to large paper maps and a low wattage interior light on a dark night. What is also desirable is some of the new GPS devices that come equipped with a voice feature that allows drivers to keep their eyes where they should be - on the road.

Parents want to keep track of their children and GPS for children is a boon to them. GPS navigation allows parents the peace of mind to know that if their child is ever lost they can find them. Simply by placing a small GPS locator device on the child will allow the parent to use GPS tracking to find them if they are ever missing.

There are other big GPS companies such as Magellan and Tom Tom but Garmin is the one that is most recognizable. Well, here are some top tips that will help you hone in on the system that is best for you.
Step 1 - Figure Out How Often You Need to Use It - If you aren’t going to need it very often, consider one of the inexpensive automotive GPS systems available. Many are very small and plug in to the cigarette lighter in the car. But if you plan on using it frequently, buy one that has many features and is easy to use.
Step 2 - Think About Your Car’s Layout - Auto GPS units have big screens that display bright digital maps. Make sure it can be attached on a pedestal from the dash or on the dashboard. Do not let the device block air vents or inconvenience the person seating next to you.
Step 3 - Choose A Device That Calculates Alternate Routes - It is always better to have alternate ways to get to a destination. Most auto GPS units let you to get directions by an address you type in, a location you select on a map, or even by the nearest intersection.
Step 4 - Be Sure It Can Give Both Vocal and Graphic Directions - Having vocal and graphic directions sure helps. When choosing a system, this is important. Step 6 - Don’t Forget Installation Time - Time costs. The more time it will take for you to install the system, the more it will cost you. Let’s face it… You are on a tight time budget. That’s why you are buying a GPS device, remember? Don’t underestimate installation time. So buy a product with an easy installation procedure and short learning curve.
Auto GPS units have been a great addition to our society because they eliminate traffic issues and allow drivers to have easy and safe driving experiences. Generally speaking, people are not intimidated by their many features because they are, for the most part, extremely user friendly. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite-based navigation system designed by the US department of defense and managed by the US Air Force 50th Space Wing. The main ideas behind SatNav were first tried in 1967, but it took over 30 years for it to be functional.The GPS in the 1990s was used only by the arm forces but soon after the military launch everyone without exception was allowed to use the GPS. In the begining the begining, this system was so expensive and required subscription to be paid regularly before use. those who were first priviledge to use this system were pilots and surveyors,who needed it to measure distances accurately.
