Travel with the Beans Around the World
Jul 17, 2009 More Saving
Can you imagine a can of beans travelling around the world? Being seen in places and sites by many people?
Beans Around the World was originally a way to have some fun with a can of beans. Now it has grown to be something that many people have taken part in. It is the journey of a can of beans, which can be followed via the Internet as the can visits many different states and cities. Is it crazy? It sure is but it is something that seems to be catching on.
Beans-Around-The-World.com is where you can learn more about this interesting scenario. It all began as a joke between two friends who passed some beans back and forth across a fair distance before it evolved into somewhat of a game.
One man’s ingenuity in sending the can forth is always matched by the other in sending it back, whether hidden in a different package or disguised as something else.
Then the company vice president, Mike Park, volunteered to take the can to China, and came back with photos proving the can of beans have seen the Great Wall of China! So thus began its trip around the world.
The website details the places the can of beans had been to, and shows the pictures that prove them. Countries from Europe to Asia, from Africa to Scandinavia, from North to South Americas, and of course dozens of cities in the United States, that can of beans has seen them all. Some had been visited twice and thrice, including many countries in whose cities the beans have toured. From 1993 to 2009, the can of beans had really been around the world.
Still, its originators want more cities, more places, more participants. In fact anyone can join the Beans Around the World (BATW) Ambassadors Club, those men and women who photographed the can of beans in their favorite places. Some pictures showed restaurants, others tourist destinations, still others out-of-the-way locales they have been alone or with their families. All these pictures have a unifying element: the can of S&W Black Beans.
Beans Around the World is a fun idea that shows that it is good to have a laugh and not take one’s self too seriously. Check out their site to see the beans with some fantastic art cars or to see where else they have been. You can also get in on the fun yourself. Browse through the FAQ section if there is anything further that you would like to know. Though the original bean can has been retired, there are still new pictures and bean sightings for you to enjoy.

Texas Artist Creates His Work the Dirty Way
Jun 4, 2009 More Saving
Dust is one of those inevitabilities. If you do not wash your car, it accumulates. At some point, most people wash their cars; but other people just let it build and build on their cars.
A lot of people just cannot resist the temptation to write messages in the dirt and dust on cars (most often “wash me” or some variant on the phrase). There is more that can be done than simply scrawling a message in the dust, however and these dust-covered windshields can become a canvas for artists to create pieces that delight even the most hardened skeptics.
Scott Wade, a San Marcos, Texas based artist saw waiting canvases where others just saw a dirty windshield. He began to explore the possibilities of dust and dirt to make his art ” work which has generated a lot of interest.
The artist resides on Roadrunner Road, a very dusty and hilly area on the north side of San Marcos. This is a place where cars become covered with dust in no time; a perfect place for Wade to work. Wade’s wife and neighbours have been kind enough to offer their own cars as canvases for Scott’s creative vision to take shape.
Of course he cannot make art with his own dirty car all the time; his wife and his neighbours have generously offered the use of their vehicles as the raw material for his art. Scott Wade does not use all of the equipment which many other artists need to make their work.
The Texan artist uses standard brushes along with his fingers and even Popsicle sticks! Wade makes use of brushes to create the fine details on his ever more popular work. His work is as unique and visually striking as it is ephemeral; dirty windshield art will last only so long ” after all, rain will eventually wash his pieces away. The artist welcomes light rains however, since these can add some interesting streaks and naturally created patterns to his work. Wade creates windshield art using a variety of subject matter, including reproductions of famous works by Van Gogh, Da Vinci and others. He has even drawn the presidents on Mt. Rushmore in the dust of his windshield. He also does portrait work, both of people and animals.
These windshield masterpieces are added to by road dust as the vehicle is driven which adds some new layers of complexity to his artwork. The morning dew creates dots and streaks in his pictures and naturally causes the image to change over time; at least until a cloudburst. The temporary nature of Wade’s work is one of the things which make it so interesting to viewers.
The artist maintains an online gallery where you can see a variety of his work. Wade tours the country on occasion, exhibiting his artwork and demonstrating his methods. This has led to a lot of interest in Scott Wade and his work, which is gaining fans all over the country.
