we found that using a small vinyl squeegee works well too for pressing the air bubbles out. we used a 4″ squeegee on our project

I think I would use a piece of terry cloth to smooth the material down.
The short cut off pieces can be placed near the edges of the dish where longer pieces are not needed.

The dishes unsanded are like teflon and a light wax spray will release just about anything. I think if you punched some small holes in the adhesive, this would allow the clear resin to lock it in when finishing side 2. There would be no release barrier that the sheet would otherwise create.
Good idea, not sure what resin would be best.
Spray would be too thin.

Is there anyway to use the dish as a mold; acrylic clear coat the silver film, then peel it off as a super lightweight reflector?

i belive is easy if you put water with soap first you put the reflective film, this help you to remove bubbles and help you fix if you make any mistake

Hi Dan. How far away was the focal point? Im guessing that it would boil water also. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the reply. I know you can buy it at their website and I realize that he tells you that in the video. The reason I asked you is because I noticed you live in the phoenix metro area and thought you might have bought it locally but I guess you got it from his website. I wanted to pick some up instead of having to mail-order it.

A small comment when applying the reflective tape. Twist a towel into a snake shape and lay it on the bench in a circular shape (like a donut). Place the dish in the middle and the towel will support the dish and you won’t have the dish rocking around while you’re applying the tape.

If you don’t mind, where did you get the sticky reflective film?

Good Video, very clever to take a dish into something useful, now to build a device for heating of water and a guide to the sun …..

: ) so how can we use things like this to power our computers or microwave? : ) i’d personally just like to see actual examples of real life situations where this can actually serve some normal purpose in life that we all rely on on a daily basis. i mean, create some electricity with this or something or show some good use out of it!

LMAO! I dig the ominous music when you’re burning the wood.

Hey Dan,
good video, but I wanted to point out that the paint these dishes have is not totally non-stick, I’ve lined one of these dishes before (posted an article about it at the builditsolar website, solar cooking section) and the autoadhesive mirror film did stick to it. It will come off fairly easily if you pull it, but it wont fall off on its own, so it probably isn’t necessary to sand it although sanding it will definitely make the surface smoother because the paint is actually a bit rough

excellent video.

You could use some varnish to seal the edges to help prevent moisture getting in perhaps

This an option ? Heating a single sheet, while sucking out the air fom under it ?
I saw something done like this, but not on a dish. Gonna look that one up.

Wow, this is an excellent how-to-do video. I’m after a parabolic mirror for many reasons, for example to boost my 3G modem, and it would certainly be a great tool for making fire. But I can’t think of any place in this hick land to find dishes. Concerning the foil, maybe hardware stores sell them?
