People throughout the UK are working hard to stop the use of the UK speed camera. Though these cameras were originally installed as a method of protecting the individuals in the areas where they are located, government officials have failed to show just how well the cameras are working in this manner. The police claim to be issuing more tickets for speeding and they hope this will reduce the amount of risk for motorists and pedestrians in the areas. Yet, these hidden cameras are angering more people. And, some people are taking action against them in alarming ways.
UK Speed Cameras & Deployment
The original objective of deploying speed cameras in the UK was to reduce accidents and improve the safety of individuals. The requirement was to slow the speed of vehicles down overall, and thus provide a safer environment. In theory this would be beneficial to everyone, although the implementation is far different. Although many speed cameras are in view, a lot are hidden - or mobile cameras are used in dubious places, where the legitimacy of their use is questionable
Speed Cameras sole intention is to capture the car details, i.e. the registration details, and the speed of the vehicle. With these two bits of information, you can be charged for speeding. The deployment of mobile speed cameras is precarious. Specifically cameras aren’t deployed for your benefit, they are deployed so that they can catch you speeding. The choice of location is generally used so that the police can argue that they were in plain site - however, you and I both probably know different.
The problem with the use of these cameras is that they have done very little to reduce the actual number of accidents on the motorway. Rather, some individuals monitoring the situation claim that the cameras actually have led to an increase in the number of accidents for one reason or another. Some believe the cameras are doing nothing more than monitoring the residents and they should be stopped. An even larger claim is that the cameras are used more for their revenue producing abilities rather than the ability of the camera to actually improve road safety. There is no doubt that these cameras have helped governments to raise huge amounts of fines, since they send thousands of tickets each day.
Motorists Take Charge
There is a growing movement in the UK to challenge the use of speeding cameras, and looking to change the rules in a formal and legitimate way. However, at the other side of the spectrum there are hard line activists who look to destroy, break or simply immobilise them. Obviously the latter method is illegal, although this does nothing to stop them.
Why are so many people upset and angered by the use of the UK speed camera? There are many reasons for this but in particular, they do not like the fact that such harsh actions are taken on them for just driving a few miles over the posted speed limit. As many would say, just driving a few miles over the limit will cost them a huge fine and three points on their license. They are treated no better than a criminal in these cases.
If a speed camera is unlikely to improve public safety, is it really needed? The rationale is that if safety isn’t changed, then the only reason for having it in operation is to generate revenue. Therefore it should be removed. On the same token, the public cries out for more traffic calming and controlling measures in very public areas, such as at schools, crossings and other similar type locations.
If the public is to believe that speeding cameras work, then the evidence needs to be there. Without this, people are skeptical of the use of speed cameras as they can only judge there intention by the results they bring - speeding fines and penalty points. To change the public opinion, some radical reports and evidence will be needed to articulate the benefits and non-financial motives for their use.
